  • This story takes place during the 1800s Switzerland (I think.)The story begins describing our main character and how she day dreams about having all this fancy furniture and other expensive items. She wanted to be famous and believed she was poor, despite her and her husband being a middle-class family. "She was distressed at the poverty of her dwelling, at the bareness of the walls, at the shabby chairs, and ugliness of the curtains." -Paragraph 3.
  • Climax
  • The husband of the main character brings a letter inviting them to the Palace. She gets upset because she has no dress or jewelry. Her husband gives her 400 francs for the dress, and she asks her friend for the jewelry. "I have no gown, and, therefore, can't go to this ball." -Paragraph 21.
  • Falling Action
  • On the way home from the Palace, she realizes that she has lost the necklace her friend had given her. They decide not to tell her that they lost it and get into debt so that they can give her a necklace that looks similar to the one she was given. "I have-I have-I've lost Madame Forestier's necklace." She cried." -Paragraph 62.
  • Resolution
  • She gives the necklace to Madame Forestier and she doesn't find out that it's a fake. "She did not open the case, as her fiend had so much feared. If she had detected the substitution, what would she have thought, what would she have said?" -Paragraph 92.
  • Afterwards, the Madame Loisel and her husband have to work to pay off their debts, taking many jobs in order to make more money. They eventually start to live like how Loisel feared she was originally."Thereafter Madame Loisel knew the horrible existence of the needy."- Paragraph 93.
  • 10 years later, after all of the debts have been paid, Madame Loisel sees Madame Forestier in the Champs Elysees. She talks to her and Forestier doesn't even recognize her at first. When she hears about how Loisel replaced the necklace, Forestier says that the original was only worth 500 francs. "Oh, my poor Mathilde! Why, my necklace was paste! It was worth at most only five hundred francs!" - Paragraph 122.
