- In this scene Tris's mother is cutting her hair. This shows how the faction, Abnegation, treats the people in it. The people who are Abnegation can rarely look into the mirror, and have very strict rules. This also is something that Tris thinks about a lot. It left a very strong mark on Tris.
- Chapter 20, page 279
- When Edward gets stabbed in the eye by Peter, Tris tries to help calm Edward. Her abnegation side really showed during this scene. And this was a way to introduce how Tris's divergence, really played a part in how she acts.
- Chapter 35, Page 439
- In this scene, Four is throwing knives at a target with Tris in front of it. Tris is trying to stick up for her friend, Al, and puts herself in danger for this. This scene also shows how Tris is starting to realize how skilled Four is.
- chapter 37, page 471
- In this scene Peter, Drew, Al, and others harass Tris. They push her against the bar of the Chasm, and scare her. She is saved by Four who beats up the guys. Tris thinks about this a lot after it happened, and she holds a grudge against all of the people involved. This scarred her, and she will probably never forget it.
- In this scene Tris learns that her mother used to be dauntless, she also learns that her mom is very strong. Tris is also traumatized by this scene because she almost died, so she thinks about this a lot. Her mother dies after this scene, and when Tris remembers her mother, she thinks about her determination to stick up for her faction.
- Tris's dad dies in this scene. He gets shot by Dauntless soldiers under the influence of Erudite. This scene is important because Tris thinks about her dad constantly after it happens, and it is a very harsh scene. It shows the true evil of the leader of Erudite, and makes Tris feel very poorly.
