Charlie is taken into a room and interviewed by a doctor who is looking to find someone to preform a procedure on. Charlie is then introduced to  a mouse named Algernon, who has gotten the same procedure Charlie will get has shown signs of increased intelligence.

Charlie gets chosen for the procedure, which is explained that it'll make him smarter. Gradually he starts showing signs of increased intelligence, reading becomes easier and he has a larger vocabulary.  
Charlie finds out the truth

Charlie shows up to his job after the procedure, he is now gradually getting smarter. He shows off to his work friends, and works a machine that would normally require training prior to managing it. He ends up getting fired from his job and then starts working in the research lab were he got his procedure. 
Passing of Algernon
Charlie and Algernon have had the same procedure to make them smarter. Charlie turns to Algernon as someone who he can talk to because they have had a similar experience. However Charlie notices a slight depletion in Algernon's intelligence that leads him to become curious. 
As Charlie researches his speculations, he finds out that his intelligence will start to decrease soon. He confronts a press- conference about the procedure he was given to speak his mind and explain his findings, realizing that the scientists and researches, lied to him.  
Charlies procedure was done after Algernon's. And through Charlies studies he has found that the intelligence is lost at the same rate it is gained. Algernon slowly gets less smart and eventually dies. This makes Charlie very sad. During this Charlie is also loosing his intelligence, things are starting to get harder and more confusing, Charlie says goodbye to certian things and people. Eventually he goes back to work at his job in the factory, and his life goes back to the way it was before his surgery.
