- In chapter 1 it shows that Ponyboy gets spotted by the Socs and gets jumped at the beginning of the chapter. This scene is significant because it shows the relationship between the Socs and the greaser gang and how they aren't friendly with each other.
- Chapter 4
- This scene shows Cherry and Marcia at the movies where Ponyboy and Johnny are sitting behind them, and Dallas says some disrespectful things to the girls. It's important because it shows that some people from different gangs can hang out with each other.
- Chapter 5
- In chapter 3 Pony, Johnny, and two-bit walk the girls home because their boyfriends were drunk and Cherry and Marcia didn't want to be driven home with drunk drivers.
- Chapter 6
- In chapter 4 Pony and Johnny decide to go to the park and the Socs come up to them. While the Socs were drunk they tried to drown Ponyboy and Johnny stepped up and killed Bob in self-defense. The rest of the Socs run away. This scene is the most important of all because Johnny didn't want to kill Bob but he noticed that Bob tried to drown Pony.
- During this chapter Pony and Johnny run off to see Dallas for advice. Dallas tells them to go to an abandoned church so that they would be hidden from the cops. Pony gets his hair bleached and Johnny gets a haircut to be disguised.
- While Dallas, Pony, and Johnny come back from breakfast they notice the church of fire with kids still in it. Johnny and Pony go inside the church to help. They come out with burns and go to the hospital.
