Of the various Bronze Age civilisations, one existed in the Indian subcontinent. However, we did not know about it until about 200 years ago! In 1856 CE, engineers building a railway line in present-day Pakistan found many burnt bricks. Not realising their importance, they used these bricks to build the railway lines.Archaeologists excavated the same site around 60 years later. As they dug, they realised that these were not just bricks but the remains of the ancient city of Harappa. This was a city of the Indus Civilisation, which existed between 2500 BCE and 1500 BCE. Since Harappa was the first city to be discovered, this civilisation is also known as the Harappan Civilisation, and its people are called Harappans.

Just like the other Bronze Age civilisations, the Indus Civilisation also developed along the valley of a river — the Indus River and its tributaries. This river provided people with water for all their needs, and the fertile land around it was great for agriculture. Over the next few years, archaeologists discovered many other sites in different parts of Pakistan and India. These sites included the following: Harappa, Mohenjo-daro, and Mehrgarh in Pakistan Dholavira and Lothal in Gujarat Kalibangan in Rajasthan
