  • In the 1700's Martha's Vineyard had a large Deaf Population. Sign language was commonly used by both Deaf and hearing people.
  • Gallaudet believed Alice deserved more, so he decided to travel to Europe to learn how deaf students were educated
  • his first stop was in Braidwood school in England, but the teachers refused to share their methods.

  • In Connecticut, DR. Mason Fitch Cogswell was raising his daughter Alice. After getting sick, Alice lost her hearing.

  • One day, A young teacher named Thomas Gallaudet met Alice. He began teacher her letters and quickly saw how capable she was.

  • Disappointed, Gallaudet went to France and met Abbe Sicard, who believed Deaf people should be taught using sing language

  • Abbe Sicard introduced Gallaudet to Laurent Clerc, a Deaf teacher, and to Jean Massieu, a successful deaf student who proved sign language worked.
