  • Cuban Missile Crisis
  • A group of people in Germany called the Natzis believed that Germany was the "superior race". This group, led my Adolf Hitler, was determined to conquer all of Europe. They started by attacking Poland. Their ally, Japan also helped by attacking Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This resulted in the United States joining the war. Germany, Japan, and Italy fought against the United States, Great Britain, and Soviet Union. After fighting, the Germans were defeated, and after the U.S. dropped two bombs on Japan, Japan surrendered as well.
  • Iran Hostage Crisis
  • Cuban dictator, Fidel Castro was opposed by many Cubans. He changed Cuba's government into a communist dictatorship, and took over some of U.S. property. This resulted in the U.S. cutting of trade with Cuba and helping Cuban exiles fight back. The CIA trained them and President Eisenhower agreed to give them air support. However, when President Kennedy took office, he refused to give the exiles air support the day they planned to invade. The exiles were defeated and Castro continued to rule.
  • The First Gulf War
  • America discovered that the Soviet Union had built bases for missiles in Cuba just 90 miles from Florida. To protect the U.S., President Kennedy set a naval blockade to prevent the Soviet Union to bring any more military supplies. He also threatened to attack Cuba if they didn't remove the missiles. The Soviet leader agreed to remove the missiles and a nuclear war was avoided.
  • September 11, 2001 Attacks and the "War on Terror"
  • The Shah, or ruler, of Iran was overthrown and in its place and Islamic Republic was established. The Shah went to the United States to access medical care. However, Iran's new government refused to allow him to enter the U.S. They led and angry mob to kidnap members of the U.S. Embassy and hold them as hostages in the capital city of Tehran. The U.S. president negotiated their release and the hostages were let go a year later.
  • Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein invaded neighboring Kuwait. In response, President Bush formed an alliance of countries to oppose Hussein. The allied forces' mission was to protect Saudi Arabia from attack. However, when Saddam still occupied Kuwait, the forces forced him to leave. 
  • Al-Qaeda, a terrorist group, flew planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. After the attacks, President Bush sent U.S. forces to Afghanistan. Since the Taliban government refuse to turn over Osama Bin Laden, the person who planned the attacks, the U.S. troops overthrew Taliban rule.
