Citra is a 16 year old girl living the average midmerican life. She doesn't have many friends or much of a social life at all. She lives in a house with her family of four which consists of her mother, father, and younger brother. Citra recieves an anonomous invitation to a show called "The Force of Destiny. There she meets Rowan a boy who also doesn't know who invited them there. Later in the show, Scythe Faraday reveals himself and says that he was the one who invited them. He says the reason he brought them there was because he wants to take on an apprentice."I just returned from the Winter Conclave and have been given this ring so that I might take on an apprentice." (Shusterman, 42)

After Faraday makes the offer Citra almost immediatly rejects it and says that Rowan should take the apprenticeship instead. Citra doesn't want to accept because she is comfortable in her normal life and doesn't want to kill on a daily basis. "Rowan can do it, I'm not interested." (Shusterman, 42)
I don't want to become an apprentice! Rowan should do it instead!
