  • Character vs. Nature
  • Mama, we ran out of - OH GOD.
  • "Lyddie looked up from the pot of oatmeal...and there in the doorway was a massive black head..." (1)
  • Character vs. Character
  • "Mistress Cutler watched Lyddie like a barn cat on a sparrow..." (24)
  • Note to self: Do not give her any cause to complain.
  • And after that, dust the tables or go to bed without dinner.
  • Yes, ma'am, right away. I'll get to it after I clean the floor.
  • Character vs. Self
  • "She would not be envious of Charlie...[but] she felt a need to explain to the woman that Charle belonged to her..." (37)
  • Me and my husband just adore Charlie. He would be a great addition to our family.
  • What?! Don't I take care of him?
  • This bear that just broke into Lyddie's house is an animal, making this scene an example of a Character vs. Nature conflict.
  • Mistress Cutler has a problem with Lyddie. She is pretty much the only one feeling this way, therefore this is a Character vs. Character conflict.
  • Lyddie does not know what to think of the mill owner growing fond of Charlie, but she is not angry at him, so she is in conflict with herself. Hence, this scene shows a Character vs. Self conflict.
