  • Most Roman's worked as farmers. The Roman's grew a wide variety of crops like wheat, olives, grapes, apples, onions, and celery. Crops also played a major role in Rome's trading system.
  • Roman traders mainly sailed across the Mediterranean Sea. Others traveled across the Indian Ocean, or by land across West Asia. The more expensive items came from West Asia.
  • The Roman Republic was set up in 500 BC. Two men called 'consuls' were in charge. Consuls decided war, taxes, and laws; however, the had to agree on the subject. Consuls received advice on the subject from the Senate.
  • The Senate will advise us on what to do next!
  • The Roman army won most wars that they fought in. The Roman Soldiers were trained to learn difficult and complicated movements, so that they were prepared and ready to go into battle against whomever they chose.
  • A Roman family consisted of a husband, wife, their children, and occasionally, their slaves. Roman men were the head of the household. The average Roman family had 5-6 children, and most Roman children did not go to school.
  • Romans believed that there were many gods. Each god controlled different parts of the world. For help, Romans would sacrifice objects to the gods. Romans brought the brilliant use of arches, baked brick, and cement into architecture. A major achievement of the Romans was the aqueduct, that carried fresh water into the homes and major buildings of the Roman Empire.
