- In the 1840s there was a great hunger and hardship throughout Europe causing 50,000 people in Prussia alone to die. Liberals and radicals were determined to end feudal obligations, create a constitution, freedom of the press and assembly, and an increase in voting rights.

- Bismarks plan was to promote nationalism and believed Prussia would benefit by isolating Austria but not waging war yet. He goes after liberals in 1863 and beyond by increasing press cencorship and bans discussion of political issues in municipal meetings
- Bismark finds possesion of documents showing frances true intentions on buying lexembourg from belgium. This terrifies Britain and south german states making them turn against France.
- A result in the Franco-Prussian war was a unified germany. this however isnt great for nationalism beacuse prussia remaied the dominat state in germany. Napoleon III leaves throne and is replaced by a republic.
