  • Whitney talks to Rainsford (Foreshadowing)
  • Dangerous?
  • Climax
  • Conflict
  • Whitney is talking to Rainsford at night on the boat when he foreshadows by saying, “The old charts call it ‘Ship-Trap Island,’” Whitney replied. “A suggestive name, isn’t it? Sailors have a curious dread of the place. I don’t know why. Some superstition — ” This is foreshadowing because Rainsford ends up trap there.
  • Irony
  • The climax is that Rainsford escaped the Gernal and being his ‘prey’. Rainsford took up his flight again. It was flight now, a desperate, hopeless flight, that carried him on for some hours. Dusk came, then darkness, and still he pressed on.
  • Rainsford and Whitney on the boat (Mood)
  • The conflict is external conflict because Rainsford I has fallen off his boat and now is lost but has a odd stranger. “Don’t be alarmed,” said Rainsford, with a smile which he hoped was disarming. “I’m no robber.I fell off a yacht. My name is Sanger Rainsford of New York City.” The menacing look in the eyes did not change. The revolver pointing asnrigidly as if the giant were a statue. He gave no sign that he understood Rainsford’s words, or that he had even heard them.
  • Resoultion
  • This quote from the story is ironic because in the end he ends up being to ‘prey’ to a hunter even though he is a hunter. “Don’t talk rot, Whitney,” said Rainsford. “You’re a big-game2 hunter, not a philosopher. Who careshow a jaguar feels?”
  • They are having a conversation late at night and the mood is a little of Rainsford is telling Whiteney to toughen up, death.”“Nonsense,” laughed Rainsford. “This hot weather is making you soft, Whitney. Be a realist. The world is made up of two classes — the hunters and the huntees. Luckily, you and I are the hunters.” They later stop talking and start off to bed for the night.
  • Rainsford ends up coming back after leaving and kills the General for revenge. Rainsford did not smile. “I am still a beast at bay,” he said, in a low, hoarse voice. “Get ready, General Zaroff.”
