  • after the Civil War, the United States made efforts to change for the better in a time called the Reconstruction Era...
  • now grab your popcorn as we get a closer look on what went down across the country...

  • you heard him! the thirteenth amendment stated slavery and involuntary servitude would no longer exist in the U.S. unless it was punishment for a crime. this was bad news for the south!
  • 13th AmendmentABOLOISHES SLAVERY
  • after slavery was abolished many freed slaves moved to the north to get away from the south and to start a new life, but discrimination still existed and lots of people did everything they could to keep blacks separated from whites
  • WHITES
  • these laws that put freed slaves at a disadvantage were called Jim Crow laws
  • COLORED
  • 14TH AMENDMENT-IF BORN IN THE U.S. YOU HAVE ALL RIGHTS OF A U.S. CITIZEN-NO STATE CAN ENFORCE LAWS THAT DEPRIVE A PERSON OF THEIR RIGHTS-STATES WILL NOT DENY ANY PERSON LIFE, LIBERTY, OR PROPERTY WITHOUT DUE PROCESS OF LAW
  • still trying to create equality, Congress ratified the 14th amendment, granting former slaves unalienable rights to life, liberty, and property; it also declared that no state can deprive anyone of these rights
  • 15TH AMENDMENTNEITHER THE GOVERNMENT NOR THE STATES COULD DENY A PERSON'S RIGHT TO VOTE BECAUSE OF RACE, COLOR, OR PREVIOUS CONDITION OF SERVVITUTDE
