- The Monkey's Paw takes place is Labernum Villa in England at the White family's house. The characters in the story are Mr. White, Mrs. White, Herbert White, and Sgt. Major Morris. Sgt. Major Morris has brought a "magical" paw from India.
- Falling Action
- The tension of the story increases when the clock strikes midnight and the masked figure appears. The mood of the party shifts from light-heartedness to horror, terror, and disgust.
- Resolution
- After Lengel embarrases the girls for coming into A&P in their bathing suits, Sammy decides he wants to impress them. He yells, "I quit!"
- Literary Term
- Mary Maloney's alibi is working, and the detectives no longer view her as a suspect. She tells the detectives it would be a "big favor" if they ate the lamb leg. They are still clueless that the leg is the murder weapon.
- The Monkey's Paw concludes with Mrs. White finally getting the door open but there is no one or nothing on the other side. The reader can infer whatever was at the door disappeared after Mr. White's final wish.
- Symbolism: The clock represents death. The time that passes represents the days in life that have passed. The more time that passes is closer to death approaching. Death is inevitable.
