  • A Retrieved Reformation, by O. Henry
  • SHOES
  • Now, Valentine, you'll go out in the morning. Brace up, and make a man of yourself. You're not a bad fellow at heart. Stop cracking safes, and live straight.
  • .
  • Me? Why, I never cracked a safe in my life.
  • Verbal irony in this scene when the warden says Jimmy is an "innocent victim"
  • .
  • That's Dandy Jim Valentine's autograph. He's resumed business. Look at that combination knob—jerked out as easy as pulling up a radish in wet weather. He's got the only clamps that can do it.
  • Great simile here, "jerked out as easy as pulling up a radish in wet weather"
  • .
  • Isn't that young lady Miss Polly Simpson?
  • The Elmore Bank
  • Naw, she's Annabel Adams. Her pa owns this bank.
  • This is dramatic irony because the bank robber falls in love with the daughter of the bank owner.
  • Jimmy Valentine was working in the prison shoe shop when the warden tells him that he is being pardoned by the governor, and that he should use this chance to reform, but Jimmy denies being guilty. He says that he's an "innocent victim", but the warden doesn't believe that for a second.
  • .
  • This is a metaphor when the story says, "the phoenix that arose from Jimmy Valentine's ashes".
  • After Jimmy was released, considerable amounts of money were taken from burglar-proof safes in Richmond and Logansport. The losses piqued Ben Price's interest. Ben Price is the detective who had previously arrested Jimmy, so he took on the case, knowing Jimmy's habits.
  • .
  • Get away from the door, all of you.
  • Jimmy went to Elmore, Arkansas for another job, and sees a pretty woman enter The Elmore Bank. He asks a boy nearby if she is Polly Simpson so he can get her name, and Jimmy finds out that she is Annabel Adams, and her father owns the bank that he was going to steal from.
  • .
  • The Elmore Bank
  • Hello, Ben!
  • Don't believe I recognize you. Your buggy's waiting for you, ain't it?
  • Jimmy decided to change his name to Mr. Ralph D. Spencer, "the phoenix that arose from Jimmy Valentine's ashes". He made a shoe business in Elmore and is to be married to Annabel. Now, he makes an honest living, and is respected in Elmore. Even Annabel's father, Mr. Adams, approved of him.

  • Ralph and the Adamses were having breakfast together, and Mr. Adams wanted to show off his new safe. Annabel's nieces, May and Agatha, were playing with the vault, and May shut Agatha in. Since there was nobody around who could open the safe, Ralph asked Annabel for the rose she was wearing, and Jimmy got Agatha out.
  • Once Agatha was safe, Jimmy walked out of the bank, expecting to be arrested by Ben Price, who was there the whole time, and had seen everything. Annabel called to Jimmy, but he didn't respond. He didn't recognize the voice anymore. Ben was outside the door, but he didn't recognize Mr. Spencer.
  • The theme of this story is love can change or reform anyone.
