  • The cow is the main producer of milk. The average dairy cow produces more than 7.5 gallons of milk a day! The difference between a cow and a bull is a cow is a female and the bull is a male. All cows produce milk after they give birth.
  • Fresh milk is driven from the dairy farm to a local dairy processing plant in an insulated, sealed tanker truck. Once the milk is in the insulated tanker, it is taken to a facility for processing.
  • Once the milk is at the processing plant, it is pasteurized and homogenized. Pasteurization is the heating of milk and its purpose it to destroy harmful bacteria. Homogenization is the mechanical separation of fat globules and its purpose is to break down fat molecules in milk so they resist seperation.
  • After the milk is processed, it is then graded. The milk is graded to make sure it has proper sanitation. After it is graded, it is then packaged and ready to be shipped to stores.
  • Once the milk arrives at the store, it is separated into different types of milk. Some common types of milk include Whole Fat Milk, 2% Milk, 1% MIlk, Skim Milk, and many more.
  • When the milk is brought home, it should immediately be refrigerated. Milk should be kept at a temperature of 40 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. Milk can be used in all kinds of recipes and is an excellent source of many nutrients!
