"The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" Theme: Prejudice can kill.
One of the main themes in "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling is Prejudice can kill. In the beginning of the story it sets out a peaceful summer day on Maple Street. On the first page the children are laughing, the parents are relaxing, everybody is enjoying their day. Suddenly, everybody hears a strange noise coming from above, they all look up. A meteor of some sort they think. People start coming out of their homes, asking if anybody's power is working, if their phone is working. They start to slowly realize nothing is working. This frightens people, so, a few people think it's a good idea to start a car and drive down town to find out what's going on. Brr pt put, the car won't turn on, they try again, brr pt put, same story. They try to walk down town but, Tommy suspects that aliens are what's causing this. This gets laughed off at first, when, suddenly, a car spurts to life, Les Goodman's car, a fellow neighbor of Maple Street. The people now believing this alien story to be true, try to find a scapegoat, anyone but themselves, looking at every idiosyncrasy a man or woman has on the block, sending the street into chaos. Cut to hours later the street is calming down, people are talking in groups, making alliances. When they see him, a figure in the distance, a dark shadowy figure, Charlie one of the neighbor has a gun, the figure comes closer, they yell, the figure comes closer. BOOM! Charlie takes a shot, the sound echoes through the still silence. The figure falls, they rush to see who it is. Pete Van Horn, a neighbor they had sent to the next street over to see if they had the same problem. everybody steps away from Charlie. The streets turn back to chaos, shots are fired, people are yelling. Cut to aliens, standing on a mountain, they don't have to do anything except tamper with their power, and they turn on one another causing the downfall of Maple Street, Prejudice can kill.
