  • Verbal Irony
  • You won't take me back home again, Snake-eye, will you?
  • Situational Irony
  • Dramatic Irony
  • I sent him home. All is off.
  • This example of verbal irony impacts the plot of the story because it shows that though, Red Chief was kidnapped and most people would be scared, he was having fun and he didn't want to leave. In "The Ransom of Red Chief," Red Chief says, "'You won't take me back home again, Snake-eye, will you?'" Normally someone would be scared and want to go home if they got kidnapped so it is ironic that he wants to stay with them.
  • This situational irony impacts the plot because it shows that Sam is scared of Red Chief. The text states, "At last, I fell into a troubled sleep, and dreamed that I had been kidnapped by a ferocious pirate with red hair." This is ironic because normally the kidnapped person would be scared, but Sam and Bill are scared of the kid they kidnapped instead.
  • The plot of the story is impacted by this dramatic irony because Bill thinks he left Red Chief behind but really he followed him back to the cave. "'The boy is gone. I sent him home. All is off.'" This is ironic because we know that the kid is behind him, but he does not. The whole point of kidnapping him was to get money but he would't leave them.
