- early in 1942, American analysts intercepted a transmission from Japan saying they were planning an attack somewhere in the pacific called AF. Americans suspicious of Japan attacking midway, sent a message out from a base on midway saying they were out of freshwater. Japan intercepting this, said to go for an attack on AF. Once Americans heard this, they sent general Chester W. Nimitz to stop the invasion.

- Japanese General Isoroku Yamamoto had a plan to capture midway. His plan was to send a diversionary attack to the Aleutian islands by Alaska. While Americans were distracted he would launch a three-stage attack. The first stage was an air attack at Midway led by vice-admiral Chuigi Nagumo The second stage was to send an invasion force of ships and soldiers to midway led vice-admiral Nobutake Kondo. The third stage was a joint invasion by Nagumo and Yamamoto

Shortly after the attack on the Aleutian islands a group of b-17 bombers from midway flew to attack Kondo's invasion force, which they thought was the main Japanese fleet, and the attack was unsuccessful and was the first engagement in the battle of midway. before dawn the next day, more B-17's were sent to destroy the invasion force, and that was unsuccessful
