  • In the early 1600s, settlers found Tamaki Makaurau very valuable because its vast amount of isthmus. During this time, the Ngāi Tai iwi, descendants of the Tainui canoe, settle in areas like Maraetai, Whitford, and Howick. Also at this time, the Wai-o-Hua tibal group was the dominant power on the isthmus

  • Around the 1700s, the Tamaki tribes began to build pa (settlements behind protective palisades). Eventually, they developed nearly 2,000 hectares of kūmara gardens! At the peak of their prosperity in 1750, tribal populations numbered in the tens of thousands. It was pre-European New Zealand’s most wealthy and populous area.

  • In 1821, wanting to avenge previous defeats by Tāmaki tribes, the Ngāpuhi leader launched a series of attacks on the region. He killed hundreds and enslaving hundreds more. In 1825 Ngāpuhi attacked again. This time their target was the Ngati Whatua tribe. Although Ngāti Whātua had over 1,000 warriors they were crushed by their foe. Apihai Te Kawau, chief of the Ngāti Whātua, abandoned the isthmus and took his people into exile.
