The Battle of Tippecanoe was a battle between the U.S. and the Shawnee Indians. The battle took place at Prophetstown, the Indian capital on the Tippecanoe River, and the site of the present town of Battle Ground, near Lafayette, Indiana. William Henry Harrison, the leader of the U.S, was on a mission to remove the power from the defensive alliance being promoted by Tecumseh, the leader of the Shawnee, and his brother Tenskwatawa, known as the Prophet. Harrison attacked and burned the village.
In mid-August, 4,500 British soldiers landed in Maryland. The U.S. Armyrealized the nation's capital was in danger. They gathered a force of about 6,000, mostly militia, on Bladensburg Road to fight 2,600 British troops on August 24. Despite having more troops, the Americans were defeated. The British soldiers continued their march to Washington, D.C. When the British troops arrived in Washing-ton, they set the U.S. Capitol on fire. Late in the evening British troops reached the president's house and set it on fire too.
The Americans began to have peace talks with British officials but the British felt this was an opportunity to attack. The British sailed toward New Orleans which is where they would have the battle. The British Secretary of War Henry Bathurst believed attacking New Orleans would help force the United States to surrender. The British troops attacked the city on January 8, 1815. General Andrew Jackson led the American troops to a very fast victory. The battle lasted only about 30 minutes and in that time, 2,000 British soldiers and 71 American soldiers were injured or killed.
