- Hello, my name is Rachel Carson, and I led the charge for discoveries that were controversial but changed the world of marine science.
- I studied biology at Johns Hopkins University, and I couldn't finish all my degrees, but it laid the foundation for my future.
- Between a letter I received and concerns from my colleagues, I launched an investigation into the pesticide DDT, which seemed to be causing unrelenting harm to birds and other animals.
- In 1962 I published "Silent Spring" which exposed how DDT was being used at extremely harmful levels and was being misused, which was causing animal populations to die off.
- My book got praise for bringing attention to the need to regulate certain chemicals, while also receiving criticism because I supposedly didn't acknowledge DDT's role in controlling the insect population.
- Though I wasn't always the most popular, I feel like my work was guided by the right motives, and I hope I was able to inspire a new era of scientists and environmentalists.
