- King Philip (or Metacom) was angry at the English settlers' attempts to steal their lands.

- Angered by this, the English colonists decided to ally with the rival Pequot and Mohegan tribes and began to plan an attack on the Wampanoag tribe's ally, the Narraganset.
- Not allowing the harsh weather conditions to hurt them, the colonists' and their allies marched into the Narraganset camp, a village consisting of about 1,000 women, mena and children. After hours of battle, the colonists gained control of the fort and burned all wigwams. Nearly all of the inhabitants died.
- After a series of battles and attacks on Simsbury, Plymouth, Longmeadow and Providence throughout the spring of 1676. But by that summer, Metacom's support began to melt. After a defeat in Hadley, Major John Talcott captured large numbers of Metacom's troops and sold them into slavery
