  • WW1 was triggered by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austo-Hungarian empire on June 28th 1914. He was shot by Gavrilo Princip, a member of the Serbian terrorist group called the Black Hand
  • One month later Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Because of a tangle of alliances in Europe, other countries then declared war on, or sided with Austria-Hungary. By the end of the war more than 100 countries were involved.
  • The major groups involved were the Central Powers (Austria-Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire) versus the Allies (Serbia, Russia, France, the British Empire and eventually the USA)
  • Throughout the war more than 65 million soldiers were deployed. There were more than 40 million casualties. Around 10 million soldiers died and around 8 million civilians died
  • By 1918 the German people were starving and its military was losing confidence. This led to the abdication of the German ruler Kaiser Wilhelm II and the surrender of Germany. At 11am of the 11 of November a cease fire was signed
  • Over 16 million animals were involved in WWI. Some of them even won medals. They were used for transport, communication and companionship and many more things
