- Thetis and Peleus were getting married, and invited everybody to their wedding except for Eris, the goddess of discord. This upset her, so she snuck into the party and planted the apple of discord. It was engraved with the words 'for the fairest'.
- Three goddesses, Aphrodite, Hera and Athena claimed that the apple was for them. They demanded that Zeus choose who was the most beautiful. Zeus did not want to do this.
- Choose one of us!
- Zeus ordered Hermes to take the three goddesses to Paris and get him to decide. Paris was a mortal shepherd known for his fair judgement.
- Who is the most beautiful?
- Each goddess offered Paris something if he chose them. Aphrodite offered him the most beautiful woman in the world, Athena offered him knowledge and skill in war whilst Hera

- Paris chose Aphrodite as the fairest and gave her the apple. His prize, the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen of Sparta.
- Aphrodite is the most beautiful!
- With the help of Aphrodite, Paris travelled to Sparta and fled with Helen back to Troy, starting the Trojan War.
