- In the play Fences, Troy is grieving the death of Alberta, he feels that death is coming for him and his family. Troy states, "all right... Mr. Death. See now... I'm gonna take and build me a fence around this yard. See?...And then I want you to stay on the other side. See? You stay over there until you're ready for me"(Wilson 72-73). Troy feels that death is coming into his family because of his wrong doings so he pleads to it that he can only come for him and to leave his family out of it.

- In Fences, Lyons comes home to ask his father for help financially, he pleads he will pay him back he just needs a little help but Troy tells him no because he feels he should grow up and get his own job that's not music. Lyons, explains that, "You got your way of dealing with the world...I got mine. The only thing that matters to me is the music"(Wilson 22). Lyons expresses to his dad that music is the only thing that gets him through the day, and that talking down on what he loves isn't right because everyone has their own ways of getting by and he should respect his.

- in the play Fences, Cory comes home after a long time from being away from his family it is revealed that he has gone away in the military. Lyons states, "Look at you, man. Look at you. Don't he look good. Rose. Got them Corporal stripes"(Wilson 86). Growing up Cory wanted to go away to college and play football but since Troy wasn't supportive and didn't sign what he needed to, Cory was left with the choice that would make him most independent.
