- After Prim's name is called at the Reaping, Katniss offers herself up as tribute in order to keep her sister safe.
- Katniss plays to win.
- Katniss is rushed off to the Capitol to participate in the 74th annual Hunger Games.
- The Game-Makers react.
- Katniss refuses to play like the others. She tries to not only to beat the other tributes, but also to beat the Game Makers.
- Katniss shows respect.
- The Game Makers decide to kick the games up a notch by sending "tracker jackers" to attack. Katniss is caught by a cluster of them. She gets away but ends up in a lot of pain.
- Katniss earns respect.
- When Rue dies, Katniss doesn't allow her death to be just another TV event, which is typical in the arena. Katniss pauses to give her a special sendoff, surrounding her with flowers.
- The people of Rue's district show their rebellious side to honor and show appreciation to Katniss for her kind sendoff to Rue.
