  • The farmer straightened his back with a grunt and stood, surveying the day's work. The rice was growing well, and would soon be ready for harvest. He smiled down to the rice and then up to the sun, squinting his eyes in the glare.
  • It was time to go home. He walked slowly back home. When he got back to the small house, there would be no children to greet him and no wife making the evening meal. He sighed to himself and straightened his hat.
  • He was lonely at times, but saw this as a part of his life. He was a good man, looking out for others in need, and always paying generous merit from the small money he made from the land. He was content enough, and deserved to be so. People said that he was a man with a good heart.
  • On that day, the farmer was nearing the end of the path, when he saw a cobra lying quite still, just before the steps to his house. For minutes the farmer looked at the cobra, as the cobra looked at him. The man realized that the cobra was not going to strike at him.
  • Moving slightly closer, there was a deep gash. The snake was very sick and probably would soon be dead. The farmer's heart was moved with pity, and without a thought to the personal danger involved. Ignoring the pains in his back. Stroking the injured creature, walking smoothly to lessen any discomfort he might be causing the snake.
  • He would sit watching the snake as it began again to move; slithering from wall to wall of the little house, and exploring the corners and dark places made by the furniture. The farmer would go to work and at the end of each day, he would come home quicker. For now, he had some company, and any sort of company is better than none, or so he thought.
