Unreliable Vs. Reliable Narrator

Texto del Guión Gráfico

  • Chapter 2
  • What Happened Last Night?........
  • Chapter 4
  • Nothing Dear!!?!
  • Nick, What's That?
  • Chapter 9
  • Mmmmmm, nope?
  • Mr.Carraway, Are you sure you don't Know anything else about the murder?
  • Most Readers agree that in the book the great gatsby you need a reliable narrator to tell the story and from the start the narrator nick carraway proves himself to be very unreliable. In chapter two Tom buchanan takes nick into the city to drink and have a nice day. This seems fine but this is the first chapter the readers really meet any characters and some are very important. So when the chapter ends with "Then I was lying half-asleep in the cold lower level of the pennsylvania station," and the narrator can not fill in any of the "..." the readers miss out on a very important night which just proves nick to be unreliable.(Fitzgerald 38)
  • Nick Carraway believes himself to be an honest man. He claims that his cardinal rule of virtue is " I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known." (Fitzgerald 59) This could be believable except for the fact that in the same chapter the readers find out that while nick is dating jordan baker, he has another women, his fiance, at home waiting for him. If nick is lying about his honesty how reliable could he be as a narrator.
  • After Gatsby's murder nick claims that there were "An endless drill of police and photographers and newspaper men in and out Gatsby's front door." (Fitzgerald 163) Nick was monitoring Gatsby's house so no one would disturb it and was able to talk to the police but for some reason never told the police all the crucial evidence he knew? Why would nick not help with Gatsby's case? Maybe because he was putting his own needs before Gatsby's. A narrator only looking out for himself couldn't be very reliable.
