  • Billy wants a pair of coonhounds very badly, however, his father cannot afford them. So, he works hard selling fruit and bait to fishermen so he can buy the coonhounds his father could not afford.
  • Billy's dogs, Old Dan and Little Ann, finally tree a coon in a huge tree and he spends days trying to cut it down.
  • Billy and his grandfather make a bet with the Pritchard boys that Old Dan and Little Ann can tree the legendary "ghost coon." When Billy refuses to kill the ghost coon, Ruben Pritchard beats him up. This causes Dan and Ann to attack Ruben's dog. When Ruben tries to attack the dogs with his axe, he falls on it and kills himself.
  • Billy's grandfather enters Billy in a coon-hunting contest. Billy, his grandfather, and his father go in a buggy. Little Ann wins the beauty contest, and they qualify for the championship. During the hunt, a blizzard hits and the dogs are lost. Soon enough, they find the dogs and they have just enough coons to win the contest.
  • While on a hunt, the dogs tree a mountain lion. The mountain lion attacks, and Billy runs in to save the dogs, only to end up having to be saved himself. Old Dan is badly wounded and he dies, shortly afterwards Little Ann dies of "heartbreak".
  • Soon after the dogs die, the family moves to town using the money Billy won at the contest. He visits the dog's grave for the last time and finds a red fern growing on top of it. According to Native American legend, only angels can plant red ferns. After discovering it, Billy finally moves on and feels ready to move to town.
