  • Washington heard that Howe had moved to Philidelphia instead of meeting with Burgoyne Albany. Washington attempts to fight the British here to protect Philidelphia and the Continental Congress there. They lost this battle, the battle of Brandywine, and Howe continues to march to Philidelphia.
  • Shortly after this battle, Washington tries to attack the British again. This is the battle of Germantown. Washinton had a strong plan to defeat them but the weather helped the British win again. This forced Washington to retreat to Valley Forge and the British could make a camp for the winter in Philadelphia.
  • The Americans retreated to Valley Forge to make a camp for the winter. Washingtons men had almost nothing here, the farmers wouldn't sell food to them because the British paid better so they didn't have much food. The prices for clothes and other important things went up, so high the Americans could not pay for it, so they had hardly any clothes. It was a struggle to survive.
  • To try to lift the soldier's spirit, Baron Friedrich von Steuben was put in charge of training. He worked to make the continental army a more organized army. It worked very well and made the army stronger every day it worked. Marquis de Lafayette also raised the troop's spirit. He used his own money to buy the men warm clothing which was much needed. Shortly after all this Washington was told the British were going to leave Philidelphia, he could now try out his new and improved army.
  • Sir Henry Clinton was the new commander of the British in North America. He thought that Philidelphia was doing nothing for the British so he retreated to New York. Washington then took his men and started chasing the British. When they battled, it seemed the British couldn't get away from the Americans, it was like they were everywhere.
  • The British went across the Hudson river eventually to escape to New York. Washington set up a camp nearby. Washington states that "after two years of maneuvering, both armies were brought back to the point they started." The war was over in the North.
