  • A man named Theodore Judah had a dream to build a railroad that covered the east and west. His resilience led him to Congress and he helped pass the Pacific Railroad Act.
  • Specific names for workers
  • There were two railroads, the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific. The Central Pacific started in California and moved east whereas the Union Pacific started in Nebraska and moved west. 
  • Tools used
  • The Chinese played an immense role in building the Transcontinental Railroad. They were given more work and dangerous tasks due to racist efforts.
  • Railroad complete!
  • A gandy dancer was someone who aligned the rails. A hogger was the driver of the train. The ironmen laid the rails onto the ties.
  • Many tools were used such as a maul (hammer), shovels, crowbars, tamping bars, and fishplates.
  • At last the railroad was completed on May 10, 1869. People everywhere gathered for the final spikes to be nailed on the railroad. In celebration, a golden-spike was nailed on the railroad. They named the location Camp Victory because it was where the railroad was complete.
