- Crooks is a portrayal of loneliness because he is the only colored man on the ranch. Due to that, he experiences a lot of racism and discrimination. He is isolated by not being allowed in the bunkhouse so he stays alone in the barn.

- In "Of Mice and Men", Curley's wife is a big representation of the theme of loneliness. She lives an isolated life, due to Curley always leaving for work. She does not talk to anyone so she gets by with being flirtatious.

- Throughout the story, Lennie and George have a dream about owning a farm. That's all they want in life. But many problems occur, causing them to loose their chance of ever owning a farm.

- Curley's wife is a portrayal of lost dreams because she spends her whole time living alone with a husband who doesn't appreciate her. Her dream was to become a Hollywood actress but wasn't fulfilled because of who she married. She lives an unfulfilled and unhappy life.
