  • As Jude discovers that Reese is nowhere near the amount of money he needs to have his surgery performed, she takes action by telling Barry "I need a new job" (Bennett 127). This is a clear example of Jude's love for Reese. She is willing to work twice as hard to earn money for something he really wants. She shows her love for him not only through words, but the lengths she's willing to go to for him
  • As the text recalls what Jude's bullies say to her, it states, "The jokes were true. She was black. Blueblack. No, so black she looked purple (Bennett 84). This example of imagery gives readers a good idea of what Jude looks like. The exaggeration of her dark skin with words like "blueblack" and "so black she was purple"shows just how dark Jude truly is.
  • As Reese looks at Jude’s unclothed body, the text states, “He didn’t mind that she was dark, maybe, but he couldn’t possibly like it” (Bennett 133). This informs readers of Jude’s identity issues. She is so insecure that she finds it impossible for someone to believe her skin is beautiful.
  • Who does the character love?
  • When Jude tells Reese that he doesn’t need to cover up around her because she doesn’t care what he looks like, the text states, “‘It’s not about you,’ he said, then slammed the bathroom door shut” (Bennett 118). Jude has the ability to strike great emotion from Reese. He is known to never yell at her, but this time, he was affected so deeply that he shouted and shut the door. Though this is not common for Reese and Jude, it proves that she has a strong effect on him.
  • How does the character look?
  • Over the phone, Jude tries to convince her mother that nothing is different about her, leaving out her and Reese’s new relationship. This leads Adele to say, “Not wrong. Different. You think I can’t tell?” (Bennett 123). Jude is unable to hide anything from her mother, even if she feels that she is acting completely natural. It is very hard for her to give Adele any impression outside of reality, simply because she knows her child well.
  • What is the character like?
  • When Jude is taunted by the kids in her class who believe that Desiree is too pretty to be her mother, the text reads, “She was thinking, somehow, of Stella—a woman who resembled her just as little but would be a better version of her mother” (Bennett 88). During this time in Jude’s life, she held a strong admiration for Stella; even though she didn’t know anything about her, excluding the fact that she left Mallard and didn’t look back.. She fantasized about Stella being her mother because she pictured her to be everything Desiree isn’t.
