The Night Stalker left a fingerprint on a stolen car. Once recovered by the police, the print was immediately scanned and searched against the millions of prints in AFIS. After three minutes, the AFIS returned a list of possible matching fingerprints. The first one linked Ramirez to the crimes.

In 1989, Richard Ramirez was sentenced to the conviction of 13 murders, five attempted murders, 11 sexual assaults and 14 burglaries.Twenty-four years later, Ramirez died from lymphoma on June 7, 2013.
