  • We're leaving! This isn't fair!
  • The Rise of the Roman Republic Plebeians perspective
  • In 509 BCE, a group of patricians led by Lucius Junius Brutus or whatever rebelled and drove out the last Etruscan King. Maybe this is why they got all of the power? But instead of a democracy, they constructed a republic, which elected officials to govern for the people.
  • In 494 BCE, Rome was a population of forty thousand people. We plebeians were most of them. We got mad over our lack of power and harsh treatment and marched out of the city. We stayed on a hill until the patricians met their demands. We did the right thing. Why should we allow them to treat us so harshly?
  • What should we do?
  • Yes! In 451 BCE, the patricians agreed to make fair laws. This is because of Rome's lack of farmers and workers since plebeians got out of Rome. The laws were published on a tablet that is now known as the Twelve Tables. We can now vote and be a part of discussions!
  • We have no choice. We have to make fair laws.
  • Yes! In 367 BCE, I was informed by my fellow friend Rose that a new law was made and that one of the two consuls have to be a plebeian! This new law also allowed plebeians to be senators too. We, plebeians, are getting more and more rights and power to be in the government. But even though we are getting more and more power, we still cannot reach the patricians.
  • We did it! We won our rights! In 287 BCE, we got a message the plebeians are now able to pass laws for all Roman citizens. Plebeians working alongside patricians are increasing by a lot. Now that that happened, assemblies such as the Citizen's Association can approve laws. After more than 200 years of fighting, we were able to win our freedom!
