- This story is very moving. It portrays the unspoken desperation of "making do". Instead of blaming Mrs. Sommers for her choices, it allows her to have an escape. I enjoyed the tale due to it's transparency.

- - Symbolism: The stockings are more than simple clothes. They serve as a link to Mrs. Sommers "better days." Their "serpent-like" texture represents the urge to put her personal identity ahead of her household duties.- Imagery: The author contrasts Mrs. Sommers two worlds. We see "the shabby old bag" and "the worn portemonnaie" set against the "spotless damask", "shining crystal", and "amber wine"- 3rd Person Limited POV: The narrator focuses a lot on Mrs. Sommers internal state. This is important because it allows the reader to "all-gone limping feeling" and her "poigant wish" at the end, which causes us to sympathize with her instead of judging her.
