- On the way back to Long Island...

- The group goes to the Plaza Hotel where Tom calls Gatsby out of lying about attending Oxford, when in fact Gatsby actually did attend Oxford for a few months, and he mocks him for calling people "old sport." Gatsby tells Tom Daisy loves Gatsby but not Tom after Tom asks about his intentions with Daisy. Daisy moves closer to Tom as the argument progresses and Tom accuses Gatsby of running a bootlegging operation. Tom sens Daisy back to Long Island with Gatsby to prove that Gatsby has nothing on him.
- Nick, Jordan, and Tom discover that Myrtle, George Wilson's wife, was a victim of a fatal hit by an automobile. Michaelis, a man who runs the restaurant next to Wilson's garage, tells them that she was hit by a car coming from New York. Tom assumes it was Gatsby and Daisy and that Gatsby was the one driving at the time. He also thinks Wilson will remember Gatsby's yellow car from before.
- Nick finds Gatsby hiding in the bushes while he is waiting outside. Gatsby tells Nick he has been hiding there to make sure Daisy does not get hurt by Tom. he sends Nick to go check on Daisy since he is still worried for her.
- NIck sees Tom and Daisy eating cold fried chicken and talking. They reestablished their relationship.
- Nick leaves Gatsby alone in the moonlight. Gatsby has made it closer to Daisy but overall, his dream of being with Daisy is gone because it will never occur.
