Gerald Gault was caught making an obscene phone call to his neighbor, Mrs. Cook. She filed a complaint and got Gerald arrested.
When he was arrested, nor him or his parents were informed about why and they only found out after the first court case was called.
Gault was put in prison and was given multiple court cases. Mrs. Cook didn't show up for any of them, and Gault wasn't given equal rights as he should have. No notes or recordings were made.
14th Amendment
Trial after trial, Gault was finally given the punishment of seven years in Juvenal detention.
If Gault was charged as an adult, then he would face a maximum fine of $50, because he was registered as a child, he had to face much worse punishments.
In Re Gault helped create the 14th amendment, and "it forbids states from denying any person "life, liberty or property, without due process of law" or to "deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." (https://www.loc.gov/rr/program/bib/ourdocs/14thamendment.html)
