- Germany
- After defeating France in a war in 1870, Prussia united many surrounding states together to form Germany.
- By 1871 the large new country called Germany was rich with natural resources making it quickly a powerful country. The Germans were proud and confident in their future.
- Germany was ruled by a Kaiser who usually make decisions alone without using his ministers. From 1888 Kaiser Wilhelm II ruled Germany and became ambitious and began building a big navy and army.
- Kaiser Wilhelm II led one of the most powerful armies in the world leading to other nations to think he is obsessed with it and war. His military expansion helped cause WW1 in 1914.
- Since 1916 the British had used their navy to block German ports. This stopped all goods getting to the country. In the winter of 1916/17, the potato supply ran out and were then rationed.
- In April 1917, the USA joined the allies and by the end of 1917 around 3 quarters of a million German people starved to death and millions were suffering. The British blockade meant no extra food or medicine was able to come in.
