  • Lacked proper food when they were sick, Twice as many soldiers died from illness rather then battle, one soldier was literally treated with poison, unprepared for the amount of casualties and were push beyond their limit to provide care to those injured, on field hospitals were understaffed and often had to resort to the less favorable options in order to save time.

  • The Union were given biscuits that were so hard they could supposedly stop bullets, beans , bacon , pickled beef, vegetables, both sides loved coffee , crushed the bean with the butt end of their rifle then drank 4 pints of it, pork, beans, and hardtack biscuits were standard Union fare, and had to be soaked in coffeeThey also often found bugs in their food
  • The Confederates weren't much better off either, confederates ate something called “sloosh,” cornmeal swirled in bacon grease, then wrapped around a ramrod and cooked over the campfire, Confederate rations were often corn bread, beef and peas, confederate often ate better after they overrun union camps as they are better supplied, Union people also often found bugs in their food.
  • The smell around the camps was so horrific that workers moved away to breathe clean air, rooms were extremely overcrowded, vermin-infested and drafty, many died of smallpox, Food was in short supply, some people exchanged rats for bread,
  • More than 50,000 men died in prison camps, Georgia POW camps burrowed themselves in the ground like moles, the underground huts were full of vermin, prisoners died at an alarming rate,
  • Battles were messy and people were lucky to escape/retreat unharmed. both sides believed that the other could not atone and that the other must be wiped out. Many were wounded in battle.
  • Battles in the Civil War were usually short, bloody encounters seldom lasting more than one day. Most were fought in rugged, forested country. The defending soldiers would form a double line, firing from behind any cover available. The attacking force, if on foot, would march forward to the beat of a drum, sometimes breaking into a double step.
