  • Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates was born in Seattle in 1955. Bill was very bright and interested in computers, and wrote his first software program at age 13! Along with his friend Paul Allen, Gates founded Microsoft, and the first version of Windows came out in 1985.
  • The capital of Washington is Olympia. Some of the other major cities include Seattle, Spokane, Tacoma, Vancouver, Bellevue, and Kent.
  • Washington's state nickname is the Evergreen State due to the large amount of forest. Its state motto is "Into the Future".

  • Washington was the 42nd state admitted into the Union on November 11, 1889.
  • Washington's state tree is the Western Hemlock. Its state bird is the American Goldfinch and the Rhododendron is its state flower.
  • Mount Saint Helens National Volcanic Monument is a popular tourist attraction in Washington. Its last eruption was in 1980, and in 1982 the volcano and surrounding area became a protected research area. The still active volcano has hundreds of thousands of visitors a year.
