- Rainsford and Whitney are boating outside of a small island, which the locals named Ship Trap Island. Typically, those who go there never end up leaving. Rainsford, while boating outside the island, falls overboard and gets left behind. He goes ashore to the island, but he has no idea what's in store for him.
- Hunted
- Travelling through the jungles of the island, he came across a site where a hunter killed some quarry. He followed the tracks of the hunter's boots to a large house. He approached the building and used the gargoyle knocker before a big man (Ivan) with a long black beard answered. It wasn't until General Zaroff came to visit him that he was allowed inside.
- A Duel
- I congratulate you. You have won the game.
- I'm still a beast at bay
- Rainsford, upon entering the building, was served a bowl of borsch and a cocktail, both of which he liked. He also had a conversation with Zaroff about hunting. Both of them like hunting, so it only fit. Zaroff began to talk about the most dangerous game to hunt, which Rainsford believed to be the Cape Buffalo. Zaroff doesn't hunt animals, at least not anymore. He told Rainsford that he hunts humans, which is more difficult because humans can reason and don't rely on instincts, and easily make their own decisions. Zaroff, later on, said that he was to try to hunt Rainsford for the next three days, and if he survived, he would be able to leave the island and return to the mainland.
- The Best Bed
- On the run, Rainsford is trying to avoid Zaroff as much as he can. On each day, he sets up a different trap to delay Zaroff's hunt. The first day, he sat up a Malay man-catcher, which injures his shoulder and causes him to retreat to heal. The next day, he sat up a Burmese tiger pit, which kills one of Zaroff's hounds. On the final day, he sat up an Uganda knife spring trap, which killed Ivan after stabbing him. He then disappears into the jungle.
- After three days of being hunted by Zaroff, he goes into his bedroom to surprise him. He won the game; by midnight on the third day, he would have won. But that wasn't enough for Rainsford. He challenged Zaroff to a duel, the winner getting to sleep in the bed.
- After duelling General Zaroff, Rainsford was allowed to sleep in the bed without any disruptions.
