  • What does the character think about?
  • When talking about her daughter's wildlife with her mentor, Peg, "Her daughter felt like a stranger, and maybe, if she was still in Mallard, she would be amused by all the ways that they were different. By all the ways her daughter reminded her of Desiree, even- she might laugh with her sister about it. Are you sure she's not yours?" (Bennett 232). Stella still thinks of Desiree, though less frequently and passionately, and even recognizes traits of her sister in her own daughter.
  • What do they talk about?
  • Stella questions Kennedy's rash decisions and lack of stability in high school and says, "Why cant you just be yourself? Stella asked once. 'Maybe I don't know who that is,' her daughter shot back. And Stella understood, she did" (Bennett 227). This comment is ironic in that Stella chastises her daughter for her lack of self-awareness while she herself is not living in her truth.
  • The author offers this hypothetical near the beginning of the book, "And yet, if Alphose Decuir could have strolled through the town he'd once imagines, he would have been thrilled by the sight of his great-great-granddaughters. Twin girls, creamy skin, hazel eyes, wavy hair" (Bennett 6). Despite being children, Stella and Desiree were perfect representations of Mallard ideals.
  • How does the character look?
  • Who does the character love?
  • Stella's daughter Kennedy is frequently startled awake by nightmares, "In the middle of the night, her daughter woke up screaming, and Stella stumbled into the girl's room to find her in the throe of another nightmare. She crawled into the tiny bed, gently shaking her awake. 'I know, I know,' she said, dabbing her tears" (Bennett 150). Stella's love for Kennedy is expressed here, although Kennedy will come to question it later in the book.
  • Following their father's death, the twins began to develop their own personalities, "Soon it became laughable that there had ever been a time when no one could tell the twins apart- Stella, so calm that even Sal Delafosse ornery horse never bucked around her- Stella, whip smart, who would go to college if her mother could afford it" (Bennett 36). Stella has always been described as quiet and serene, even as a child.
  • What is the character like?
  • Where are they going?
  • Stella returns to school in order to obtain her GED, "So she'd told Blake that she wanted to take a GED class. 'I think that's great, Stel,' he said. He was pacifying her, of course, but she signed up for the classes anyway. Two nights in a row, she sat in the parking lot outside of the public library, afraid to venture inside. She would feel stupid, staring blankly at the chalkboard" (Bennett 224).Stella attends Santa Monica College classes because she is bored and uneducated. This is relevant to her character because she has always aspired to attend college and become a teacher.
