  • Personification: Poe uses personification in order to bring the room to "life""the room—of the dark and tattered draperies, which, tortured into motion by the breath of a rising tempest, swayed fitfully to and from upon the walls, and rustled uneasily about the decorations of the bed."
  • SYMBOLISM: “No portion of the masonry had fallen; and there appeared to be a wild inconsistency between its still perfect adaptation of parts, and the crumbling condition of the individual stones.” Paragraph 5
  • The crumbling decaying house- seems to symbolize the state of the Usher family- which is also crumbling, and the family is isolated and removed from normal life- just like the house- which is completely drained of life unlike how the narrator remembered it. the family also has an eerie crumbling vibe to it.
  • FORESHADOWING: When Roderick says that he must perish in this bounden slave- it can be seen as a him foreshadowing his own untimely death- which happens to be in the house.
  • #160;"I must perish in this bounden slave" (pg9)
  • Poe uses DOUBLING: Roderick's shiny, bright, eye can be seen as indicating a Doppelgänger pair and can be seen as a foreshadowing of the twins' death, or a indicator that helps clear up the actual relationship between Madelaine and Roderick
  • the now miraculous luster of the eye, above all things startled and even awed me. (P8- line 23-24)
  • TONE: "upon the bleak walls— upon the vacant eyelike windows—upon a few rank sedges1—and upon a few white trunks of decayed trees—with an utter depression of soul" (paragraph 1- lines 12-13)In this paragraph Poe sets the tone by describing a dark and gloomy setting, and by the word choices he makes, he sets the sort of haunted, depressed tone we see throughout the story
  • MOOD: The house of Usher looks like it is crumbling, run down, scary, and gloomy. The setting in the beginning of the story creates a sad and scary mood, which affect the narrator- and in turn his statement affect us. The narattor uses the words sickening, dreariness, and torture in order to affect the readers mood- which is a depressing mood.
  • "There was an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart—an unredeemed dreariness of thought which no goading of the imaginationcould torture into aught of the sublime." (P1 LINES 17-18)
