- Tally- a girl who is about to celebrate her 16th birthday and is about to undergo a surgery to become beautiful. Her friend Peris has undergone a surgery to become beautiful and he is in New Pretty Town. She really wants to meet him and sneaks into the city to see Peris again.

- Tally sneaks into a party and people find her ugly and make fun of her. She runs away to the elevator and accidentally meets Peris. He is not happy that she put herself in danger and makes her promise never to do it again. While she is running away to her house she meets an Uglies who is also running away like her.

- Shay and Tally became friends and Shay taught Tally how to use a hoverboard. Shay told Tally about another city called Smoke and a man from there named David but Tally didn't believe him. Shay came to Tally's house that night and told her about his plan to escape and wanted Tally to come with him. Tally thought Shay was crazy and why didn't Shay want to be pretty.
