- The Spartacus League was formed in 1916 by Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg, both of whom were prominent leaders of the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) before they spilt from the party due to their opposition to the war. The Spartacists were opposed to the new government that had been established after the fall of the German Empire and the abdication of Kaiser Wilhelm II, which they viewed as a continuation of the old regime.

- On January 5, 1919, the Sparticists staged a mass demonstration in Berlin, demanding the release of political prisoners and the establishment of a socialist government. The demonstration turned violent, the Spartacists seized control of several key government buildings. The government, led by Friedrich Ebert, responded by sending in the Freikorps. The uprising was quickly defeated, and the government reestablished control over Germany.

- Liebknecht and Luxemburg were both arrested and later murdered by Freikorps. The failure of the Spartacist Uprising had significant consequences for the left-wing movement in Germany. The SPD, became more conservative, while the German Communist Party (KDP) emerged as a more radical alternative. The events of the uprising also highlighted the deep divisions within the German left, which continued to play out in the years leading up to WW2.
