  • Watchmen successfully immerses the reader into a dreadful situation between Eddie and Sally. In this particular sequence, we are visually introduced to Eddie for the first time. Watchmen shows us how Sally has been objectified and invalidated through the eyes of Eddie.
  • The beginning of this particular scene portrays the minutemen discussing certain political aspects, to which Sally announces she needs to get changed. The angle of this panel focuses on Sally from afar as the rest of the minutemen walk away.
  • The angle in the next panel approaches Sally, as though we're following Eddie. A speech bubble quoting “Hi.” is aimed towards a disembodied voice at first, enhancing a sense of surprise from Sally’s point of view. Sally questions him with a rather unamused tone: “Eddie? What the hell are you doing here?”
  • It is in this unfortunate sequence we're exposed to a sexual assault, where Eddie gaslights Sally by forcing her to comply to his sexual desires. "Sure. No. Spelled Y. E". blatantly ignoring her rejection and lack of consent.
  • Moving forward, there is no clear answer as to whether a rape had taken place, and how much time had passed until Hooded Justice steps in to interrupt whatever is taking place. He instantly realizes this isn't consensual on Sally's part, which leaves us to question why he demands her to cover up once Eddie has left?
  • This leads us to question why Hooded Justice was so quick to turn a blind eye. Was this the symptom of a patriarchal viewpoint?
  • Did Hooded Justice, in this moment, view Sally as a deserving victim for the way she had deliberately undressed in a room where there was "easy access"?
  • This scene certainly shines a light on victim blaming, and the tragic reality of how a rapist finds a way churn the realities of what had truly happened, leaving the victim in a spiral of guilt and shame.
  • This leaves us with an ambiguous ending to the situation. Upon the flashback's ending, we go back to the older Sally; a Sally who doesn't identify as a victim. Sally seems to have suppressed her vulnerability in the situation.
