  • Volcanoes release carbon dioxide, water vapour and nitrogen. This formed the earth's early atmosphere. This was around 90% carbon dioxide, but the levels of nitrogen increased too. There was also small traces of methane and ammonia.
  • 2,700 Million years ago
  • Then, the earth began to cool and so the water vapour condensed to form the first seas and oceans. Some of the water froze completely to form the ice caps.
  • 500 Million years ago
  • Life began to form in the ancient seas, though it was simple as it had to exist without oxygen.
  • Present
  • Later, algae began to form. The algae began to photosynthesize, using carbon dioxide and water, making oxygen as a waste product. As the oxygen levels increased, various plants and animals began to evolve,
  • The levels of carbon dioxide continued to drop as it was absorbed by rocks, and into what would become fossil fuels.
  • Currently, the levels of gases in the atmosphere are as follows:Oxygen - 21%Nitrogen - 78%Carbon dioxide - 0.04%Argon - 0.9%Sodium and water vapour are trace
