Volcanoes release carbon dioxide, water vapour and nitrogen. This formed the earth's early atmosphere. This was around 90% carbon dioxide, but the levels of nitrogen increased too. There was also small traces of methane and ammonia.
2,700 Million years ago
Then, the earth began to cool and so the water vapour condensed to form the first seas and oceans. Some of the water froze completely to form the ice caps.
500 Million years ago
Life began to form in the ancient seas, though it was simple as it had to exist without oxygen.
Present
Later, algae began to form. The algae began to photosynthesize, using carbon dioxide and water, making oxygen as a waste product. As the oxygen levels increased, various plants and animals began to evolve,
The levels of carbon dioxide continued to drop as it was absorbed by rocks, and into what would become fossil fuels.
