- Now the main question is, are we soldiers, or are we laborers? We are fully armed, and equipped, have done all the various duties pertaining to a soldier’s life, have conducted ourselves to the complete satisfaction of general officers, who were, if anything, prejudiced against us.... Now your excellency, we have done a soldier’s duty. Why can’t we have soldier’s pay?
- The worst part of camp life was the physical discomfort, hard labor and the influence on the mind. The exercise was so fatiguing. Bands would come and play to lift the soldiers spirits. During the winter of 1862-1863, the bands were forbidden to play uplifting songs like "home sweet home" because the soldiers spirits were so low and they were afraid this would lower their spirits even more. A third of the southern soldiers could neither read or write. The chance of dying in combat was one in 65. One in 10 would be wounded. One in 13 would die of disease.
- African American soldiers in the south saw limited military action. When soldiers were being used, they were commanders and used to be cooks and other things along those lines. The would also build things like bridges and buildings. African Americans served in more then 400 battles. The confederates targeted the African American troops more then the white union troops leaving more fatalities and injuries for the African Americans. African American prisoners of war would most likely be killed. During the Civil War, about 200,000 African-Americans enlisted in the Union Army and 30,000 in the Navy. Another quarter of a million black men and women worked for that army as nurses, cooks, pilots, fortification builders, while many more served as guides, spies, and scouts.
